In 2020, the Santa Ana River Watershed Project Authority (SAWPA) conducted a study on the economic and technical feasibility of implementing a weather modification program, also known as cloud seeding, in the Santa Ana River Watershed to increase water supply in the region. With the completion of this study, SAWPA is proceeding with planning a Pilot Program, including the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) environmental review and ground seeding site analysis.
SAWPA has embarked on a public outreach and engagement effort to inform the public and stakeholders on the program, including addressing program elements and questions regarding the safety of cloud seeding. Preparations for a grant application to cover 50% of the pilot program cost are also being prepared.
